The Crystal Frontier: A Novel in Nine StoriesBy Carlos Fuentes

The nine stories comprising The Crystal Frontier, a brilliant work of fiction from Carlos Fuentes, all concern people who in one way or another have had something to do with, or still are part of, the family of one Leonardo Barroso, a powerful oligarch of northern Mexico with manifold connections to the United States.

From Library Journal
Leonardo Barroso is an unscrupulous Mexican oligarch whose fortress of a villa is only a short drive from the "crystal frontier" of the title, and each one of the nine stories comprising this work explores the life of someone touched by him. There's Juan Zamora, whose medical studies at Cornell were made possible by the stratagems of Barroso; the beautiful Michelina from Mexico City, whom Barroso marries; off to his son and then takes as his own, and the working girls of Barroso's maquiladoras, who lust after the gringo male dancers of the clubs. The outrageous racism of Fuentes's Anglo characters, such as Miss Amy Dunbar and border patrol Dan Polonsky, may seem excessive and stereotyped, but it is also hard to deny that such attitudes exist along this troubled border. Fuentes masterfully interweaves Mexican politics, economics, and history within the individual stories, giving a brilliant update on relations between an extremely poor country and the richest in the world. A recent (1995) and highly recommended work by Mexico's premiere novelist.?Jack Shreve, Allegany Community Coll., Cumberland, Md.

From Booklist
Fuentes has no qualms about using fiction as a vehicle for social analysis. When this union between art and commentary succeeds, it generates indelible scenes of tremendous passion, of which there are many in this set of nine loosely connected stories, but when it fails, Fuentes' tales turn awkward. It may be that Fuentes' immense sense of responsibility toward Mexico and its people--a commitment that compels him to dramatize the entrenched corruption and ferocious poverty that drive so many people across the border--at times simply overwhelms the delicate emotional balance crucial to the magic of a story. That said, these are nonetheless gleaming fables about the volatile and urgent relationship between Mexico and the U.S., unnerving stories rich in metaphor, wit, and remarkable characters, from Don Leonardo Barroso, an ambiguous figure of great wealth and power, to Juan Zamora, who leaves his oppressively poor life in Mexico City to study medicine at Cornell, where he discovers both his homosexuality and his deep compassion. Then there's young, vulnerable Marina, who dreams of seeing the ocean as she works assembling televisions in a factory along the border, and the hero of the haunting title story, Lisandro Chavez, who, along with dozens of other men, is flown into Manhattan to spend a weekend cleaning the inside of a glass skyscraper, the latest high-tech form of migrant labor. Fuentes boldly shines his high beams on "the illusory crystal divider, the glass membrane between Mexico and the U.S.," thus illuminating both our vast differences and our manifold connection. Donna Seaman

From Kirkus Reviews
A sardonic ``novel in nine stories'' about relations between the US and Mexico, by the latter country's acclaimed author of such cosmopolitan fictions as Terra Nostra (1976) and The Campaign (1991), among others. Each story portrays a conflict involving a family member, intimate, or business associate of ``the powerful political Leonardo Barroso,'' a deal- and king-maker with a foot in both countries and a shadowy demeanor and personal history. For example, ``A Capital Girl'' traces the emotional vacillations endured by Michelina, an impressionable young woman who idolizes her godfather, Leonardo, as a result accepting marriage to his deeply unstable son Mariano. These and other characters reappear in several stories, a few of which are rather too nakedly discursive (e.g., the wheelchair-bound narrator's monologue in ``The Line of Oblivion,'' and a predictably manic-depressive relationship between a wealthy white matron and her abused Mexican housemaid in ``Girlfriends''). Indeed, most of the stories are too frequently interrupted by ironic commentaries on both American arrogance and myopia and Mexican illiteracy and inertia. However, ``Spoils'' presents a delicious characterization of its protagonist Dionisio, a cooking expert and gourmet explorer of several species of appetites. And in ``Malintzin Las Maquilas''--a lively, sexy story whose sociopolitical content emerges naturally from its character relationships--Fuentes vividly depicts the volatile bonding among three women factory workers. The long (and uneven) climactic story, ``Rio Grande, Rio Bravo,'' explores in too pat a fashion the human and diplomatic ramifications of ``crossing the border,'' and brings the volume to a stagy (if perfectly logical) violent end. A vast improvement over Fuentes's recent self-indulgent metafiction Diana (1995), and a pretty creditable dramatization of the mocking rhyme with which the book leaves us: ``poor Mexico,/poor United States,/so far from God,/so near to one another.'' -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. I balked at the price--$130.00--but the recommendations for this book from others in the field of Germanic mythology and religion were so strong that I bit the bullet. I am so glad I did. This book takes the years of reading I have done on the subject and not only distills it but adds an equal measure of its own in-depth research and insight. If you are looking for a beginner's introduction to the subject, skip this until you have a good deal of learning under your belt. But if you're looking for real insight into Nordic religion' legend and mythology, you would be very hard pressed to find a better source.

In this work, E. O. G. Turville-Petre explores the sources and material of Norse religion, particularly during the Viking age. The result was this classic survey of the topic. The author explores the major gods of the Norse pantheon, as well as general practices of worship and the fact that belief in the gods was not entirely universal. Each section provides clear summaries of important studies in the area, as well as clear analysis of the primary and secondary sources. If one is studying Norse mythology or the Viking age, this would be one of the top ten books to own on the subject. I would highly recommend it.

I saw this book listed in the reference section of many books, and it was recc to me by a friend. This is NOT a light read. It is NOT a basic overview. It was however a great summary of many different topics, backed with study. This is certainly more like a text book on cultural language studies and how they are intermixed with religion, myth and history. I HIGHLY recc this book to anyone seriously looking into the Nordic mythos, religion and way of life, whether for the mundane or esoteric reason. It is well worth the price you will have to pay.

This and the collected works of H.R. Ellis Davidson are the finest materials out there. This is probably the most in depth exploration of the Gods and myths. You will find notes, themes, and observations within this work which you will not come across elsewhere. The book is expensive (sadly) but worth it. Make it a present to yourself on your next birthday!

Gives a great comprehensive treatment of the various gods and godesses in the norse pantheon.

Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II, by George Weigel

Amazon.com Review

Witness To Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II by George Weigel is as comprehensive a biography of its subject as can be hoped for while the Pope still lives. Weigel, a journalist who came to the Pope's attention after the publication of his book, The Final Revolution: The Resistance Church and the Collapse of Communism, wrote Witness To Hope with his subject's encouragement and assistance. Weigel had unprecedented access to the Pope's correspondence (with, among others, world leaders including Mikhail Gorbachev). He reports lengthy conversations with many members of the Pope's inner circle, and he occasionally reveals vivid details of the Pope's daily life (for example, at the beginning of each day, the Pope's adviser's hear moans and groaning from John Paul's solitary prayers in his private chapel). According to Weigel, the Pope told him that other biographies "try to understand me from outside. But I can only be understood from inside." Unfortunately, Weigel's method for understanding the Pope "from inside" depends on psychological conjecture ("It may help to begin by thinking of Karol Wojtyla as a man who grew up very fast") and is weakened by his extreme eagerness to praise his subject ("the man with arguably the most coherent and comprehensive vision of the human possibility in the world ahead"). More troubling, Weigel does not ask some of the really difficult questions about this Pope--regarding his involvement with sects such as Opus Dei, for example, or the relationship between his innovative "theology of the body" and his conservative stance on homosexuality, or even the vicissitudes of prayer life. Witness To Hope is a valuable book because it reports many facts that others have not reported. But for incisive analysis of this Pope's theological and political significance, or for insight into his spiritual life, readers will have to wait until the principals in his life story are free to speak more frankly with some future biographer. --Michael Joseph Gross

From Publishers Weekly

Weigel's massive work aspires to be definitive: it is subtitled "the," not "a," biography of John Paul II. Weigel, a Catholic layman and a fellow at the conservative Ethics and Public Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., enjoyed the cooperation of the pope and access to top Vatican officials, so the book is rich in new detail. Determined to explain this papacy from the "inside out," Weigel successfully focuses on John Paul's trademark ideas: Christian humanism, the inner connection between freedom and truth, and culture as the driving force of history. As a guide to the pope's thought, Witness to Hope is invaluable. Yet as biography, it is often defective. Weigel frequently dismisses John Paul's critics rather than debating their ideas. The author's strong pro-Americanism leads him to misrepresent the pope as opposing a "third way" between capitalism and socialism and to treat his criticism of the Gulf War as a rare misjudgment. Though John Paul is a towering 20th-century figure, the assertion that his papacy is the most important since the Counter Reformation seems overblown. The book is well written (if somewhat repetitive, perhaps inevitably so with more than 900 pages) and Weigel's command of the material is impressive, but Witness to Hope reads more like a valedictory hagiography than a sober work of journalism. At over 1000 pages, this might be considered to be a massive book. But, the story being told is massive and its subject is intense and deep and large in wisdom and self-discipline and faith and hope and love. More could have been said. The description of the person and events is actually sparse in comparison to what it might have been.Such a story and journey of a life it is! What a leader! Such clarity of philosophical thought! Such self-giving! Such prayer and vision and courage!Well-researched. Well-organized. Insightful analysis and commentary. Well stated and written. It is a large book but it provides a large education. Topics addressed include culture, philosophy, ethics, policy, strategy, tactics, history, prayer and theology.

At least one seminary requires those in spiritual formation to read this biography of Pope John Paul II. I rank the book just below the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church in my list of books that are important to read. I can usually summarize a book in a page or two, but not this one. The book offers so much that I filled thirteen pages with terse notes written in paragraph form. The first 250 pages of the book inspire the reader, who realizes the great hardships the Pope endured from his early life through his priesthood under Nazi and Communist rule. His work with the Church's intellectuals and performing artists developed the cultural base that succeeded in combating these totalitarian regimes. His discussion groups tolerated all ideas, provided that all were striving for truth. His development of a new Christian Humanism was, and still is, effective in combating social and spiritual ills everywhere. The remaining 600 pages show how the Pope dealt with specific problems in the Church and in the world. He approaches all as a sincerely holy, humble, and reverent pilgrim, full of hope for humanity. He apologizes for the failures of Catholics. He invites those who oppose him to join him in dialog, yet he never compromises Church principles. The book covers each such case, including each encyclical, with sufficient detail that the reader learns from the Pope throughout the book.Because I have read probably every encyclical and many of the apostolic letters written by the Pope, much was familiar to me -- after the book jarred my memory. The most important new point that I learned from the book pertained to a question I have asked many a philosopher: Can every philosophy describe all of the truths of the Catholic faith? The Pope answered that some philosophies are so poor or so closed as to make any real dialog impossible.

Unlike nearly everyone else who's written anything about John Paul II (most especially including the American media, which is obssessed with judging everything by the same standards it applies to American politics and/or entertainment), George Weigel demonstrates in this book that he clearly understands his subject. As a result, he has written a book that gives the reader a complete portrait of a man who will undoubtably do down in history as one of the most important figures of the 20th Century and, most likely, one of the most influential successors to St. Peter in the 2000 year history of the Catholic Church. At some points, this book will probably be hard for the average reader to get through; Weigel's discussions about the extensive, impressive, grounding in philosophy that Karol Wojtyla had before he became Pope may be too technical for some people, for example. Those defects, however, pale in comparison to the truly inspiring narrative that Weigel has created here; for example, his telling of the rise, fall, and ultimate triumph of the Solidarity movement, and John Paul's undeniable role in the collapse of Soviet Communism, is truly fascinating. This isn't a book just for Catholics, or Professors of theology, it is the story of a quite ordinary man from Krakow who, due largely to what he would consider the hand of God (though I would add that his intellect had alot to do with it as well), rose to become the answer to Josef Stalin's contemptuous, ultimately foolish, question "How many divisions has the Pope ?"This book is a long read, but, in the end, well worth it.

This was the first biography I have read outside of school. I could not have made a better choice. The writing was excellent and through. It was dense and this took quite a while for me to read. An enjoyable challenge. This book does take you on a journey with the Saint. I felt like I became a friend along this walk. I learned history and grew closer to God, the shaper of history. St. John Paul 2 was truly great and I see the echoes even now. The Church was shaped by the Holy Spirit through this man.I walked away from this journey with a profound respect for a God, His instrument, human dignity and hope. I hope you enjoy the experience as well.

I get the idea that I'm reading something people could read and enjoy a thousand years from now. It is a piece that I think would be very accessible for even the person most distant from faith. Perhaps that is because the future Pope held a simplicity rooted in rich culture yet tempered by his homeland's history of being subjugated from the north, then the west, then the east. His family and his connection with Jewish friends throughout his life likely imparted a wisdom enabling him to deal with powers in the world that could be oppressive to the human soul. Perhaps, thinking of what future history may bring, this will become a 'how-to' book for those facing such oppression.

Slurry Systems HandbookBy Baha Abulnaga

The most comprehensive resource on slurries and slurry systems, covering everything from fluid mechanics to soil classification, pump design to selection criteria.

Slurries are mixtures of liquids and solid particles of all types. For instance, liquid is used as a way of transporting what you get out of the mine, which might be better than shoveling it into freight cars and carrying it out by train.

Slurry systems are fundamental to dredging, many mineral processes, bridge and tunnel construction, and to the manufacturer of synthetic petroleum products from oil sands.

A COMPLETE GUIDE TO SLURRIES AND SLURRY SYSTEMS

Here is expert, comprehensive coverage of slurries and slurry systems, covering everything from fluid mechanics and soil classification, to pipeline, plant and pump design and materials selection criteria for wear resistance.

This unique handbook is logically divided into two sections: the first covers the hydraulics of slurry flows and includes information on the principles of classifying soils, mixing with water, design of pipelines from coarse to very fine slurries, as Newtonian and Non-Newtonian flows. In a very innovative approach, the mathematics of flow of slurry in open channels, drop boxes and cascades is presented. The reader is guided through those complex flows by numerous solved problems in SI and USCS units. The second section is devoted to the equipment used to make and pump slurries, and contains data on rock crushing, milling, and grinding, separation, classification, filtering, and thickening. The author also delves into the specific aspects of the design of slurry pumps, the selection of materials for wear resistance. The book progresses with practical examples of operating slurry pipelines, appropriate codes and guidelines to conduct feasibility studies for slurry concentrate or tailings disposal systems.

Written by an expert with international experience, Slurry Systems Handbook also includes:
* Appropriate reference standards from soil classification to pipeline construction
* Practical examples and more than 70 solved problems of design
* Programs of slurry hydraulics for the personal computer
* Comparison between different mathematical models for heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures, Newtonian and Non-Newtonian flows
* Open channel slurry flow, drop boxes and cascades
* Advanced equations for further research
* Materials selection for abrasion and erosion-corrosion
* Detailed design of slurry pumps
* Slurry solutions to the siltation of large dams
* Feasibility study for hydrotransport

This is truly a reference any slurry system engineer would want on their shelf and at their fingertips.

About the Author
BAHA ABULNAGA, P.E., obtained his Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering in 1980 from the University of London and his Masters in Materials Engineering in 1986 from the American University in Cairo, Egypt. The first years of his professional career were devoted to the adaptation of air cushion platforms to desert environments, as well as the development of renewable energy systems. In 1988, he joined CSIRO (Australia) as a scientist. There he conducted research on complex multiphase flow for the design of smelting furnaces.

Since 1990, he has been active in design of rotating equipment, pumps, and slurry pipelines and processing plants. His career has been a balanced mixture of design of equipment and consulting engineering.

He has been employed as a design engineer for a number of manufacturers such as Warman Pumps (now part of Weir Pumps), Svedala Pumps and Process (now part of Metso Mineral Systems), Sulzer Pumps North America, and Mazdak Pumps and Mixers. He has also contracted as a slurry and hydraulics specialist for major consulting engineering firms such as ERM, SNC-Lavalin, Fluor, Bateman, Rescan, and Hatch and Associates. His involvement in the design, expansion, and commissioning of projects has included ASARCO Ray Tailings (USA), LTV Steel (USA), Zaldivar Pipeline (Chile), Southern Peru Expansion (Peru), Lomas Bayes (Chile), Escondida (Chile), BHP Diamets (Canada), Muskeg River Oil Sands (Canada), Bajo Alumbrera (Argentina), Homestake Eskay Creek (Canada), and many other engineering projects, feasibility studies, and audits.
